July 9, 1863 was the day

the Mississippi came home

once more in the nation

Port Hudson surrendered

five days after Vicksburg

signaling an end in sight

from this horrific fight

while much more to come

still the defeat had begun

men, supplies, weapons

simply now an attrition

overwhelming odds seen

a cause now was lost

dearly paid was this cost

brothers, cousins, families

Old Man River come home!
