“The Grass Always Returns”

In the cycles of history to discern

battles and storms and destruction

burning the earth and making nude

crushing as massed hoards pass

bodies strewn and left unburied

desolation and sadness embrace

but the grass always returns first;

 

Building of great cities of steel

cemented paving’s crushing all

cars, pollution, refuse and fires

withering chemicals all loosed

caring not for the environment

nothing found living to be found

yet the grass always returns first;

 

Roots forming and regenerating

acting as the stitches repairing

catching the water to refresh all

stopping erosion saving the soil

allowing trees to grow majestically

beginning of all natural habitats

as the grass always returns first;

 

Ignored in natures chained time

man who has stripped the forests

placing greed over any renewals

calling their efforts good energy

never replacing or giving back

when the skyscrapers destroyed

it’ll be grass which returns first;

 

When man is gone from history

all will again return to the future

soon rust and decay removing

man’s efforts to destroy nature

only the shambles overgrown

as the monuments of the past

covered over by the grass first!
