At embarkation there were twelve
on the landing craft still the same
hours later there was only one
some drowned others wounded
killed and maimed in heave fire;
Soon the water and beach a mire
too many due to error drowned
then to question why the only one
as combat has collected its claim
all that’s left the one of twelve!
