General Conference—No Ordinary Blessing
09689_000_003
A fine member of the Church was talking with a neighbor who was not of our faith. When the topic of discussion turned to general conference, the neighbor asked, “You say you have prophets and apostles? And twice a year in a worldwide conference they reveal the word of God?”
“Absolutely,” the member replied with confidence.
The neighbor thought about that for a moment. He seemed genuinely interested and then asked, “What did they say in the last general conference?”
At this point the good member of the Church went from feeling excited about sharing the gospel to feeling embarrassed. Try as he might, he couldn’t think of the details of a single talk.
His friend found this troubling and said, “You mean to tell me that God speaks to man in our day and you can’t remember what He said?”
The brother felt humbled by this exchange. He vowed that he would do better to remember the words spoken by the Lord’s servants in general conference.
We all know how hard it is to remember every message of general conference, and I’m confident that we need not be embarrassed if we don’t remember everything. Nevertheless, there are messages in each general conference given as a gift and a blessing from heaven specifically for our personal life situations.
In preparation for general conference, let me suggest three basic concepts that may help us to better receive, remember, and apply the words spoken by the Lord’s servants.
1. Members of the Church are entitled to personal revelation as they listen to and study the inspired words spoken at general conference.
As you prepare for general conference, I invite you to ponder questions you need to have answered. For example, you might yearn for direction and guidance by the Lord regarding challenges you are facing.
Answers to your specific prayers may come directly from a particular talk or from a specific phrase. At other times answers may come in a seemingly unrelated word, phrase, or song. A heart filled with gratitude for the blessings of life and an earnest desire to hear and follow the words of counsel will prepare the way for personal revelation.
2. Don’t discount a message merely because it sounds familiar.
Prophets have always taught by repetition; it is a law of learning. You will hear repetition in themes and doctrines in general conference. Let me reassure you: this is not due to a lack of creativity or imagination. We continue to hear messages on similar issues because the Lord is teaching and impressing upon our minds and hearts certain foundational principles of great eternal importance that must be understood and acted upon before we can move on to other things. A wise builder first lays the foundation before erecting the walls and the roof.
3. The words spoken at general conference should be a compass that points the way for us during the coming months.
If we listen to and follow the promptings of the Spirit, they will serve as a Liahona, guiding us through the unknown, challenging valleys and mountains that are ahead (see 1 Nephi 16).
Since the world began, God has raised up prophets who speak the will of heaven to the people of their times. It is our responsibility to listen and then apply the messages the Lord provides for us.
Our merciful and loving Heavenly Father has not forsaken and will not forsake His children. Today, as well as in times past, He has appointed apostles and prophets. He continues to reveal His word to them.
What a marvelous privilege it is to hear God’s messages for each of us during general conference! Let us prepare well for this great blessing of divine guidance delivered by His chosen servants.
For this is no ordinary blessing.
Teaching from This Message
Read the article together. Encourage the family to identify things to listen for during general conference.
To help young children apply the counsel given by President Uchtdorf, show them a General Authority chart (found in the conference issue of the Liahona and Ensign). Let them know that the First Presidency and Quorum of the Twelve Apostles will be speaking in general conference. Encourage children to listen to conference and draw a picture to help them remember what they learned. Parents can visit conferencegames.lds.org for more conference activities for children.
Youth
Good, Better, Best
By Mary-Celeste Lewis
09689_000_004In his October 2007 general conference talk, Elder Dallin H. Oaks of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles talked about activities that are “good, better, and best.” When he got to the part about “the over scheduling of children,” I squirmed guiltily in my seat.
I knew I was doing too much. I was in school plays, taking challenging classes in school, and was involved in several other activities. I hadn’t been attending Young Women activities faithfully, and my Sundays were filled with the stress of trying to complete last-minute homework. Practicing music and editing the school newspaper had lost their element of fun and had become work.
Elder Oaks’s talk made me take a good look at my schedule. My activities were good, but there were too many of them. I had to choose the best ones. As I tried to decide which activities to forsake, I realized that the gospel of Jesus Christ was the best priority anyone can have. I put prayer and scripture study at the top of my list, and since then, my life has run more smoothly.
Elder Oaks taught me that when we do what the Lord wants us to do first, everything else will fall neatly into place. If I study my scriptures before I play games or even before I do my homework, everything important will get done. When I base my life around the Lord, instead of adding Him in as an afterthought, my life has an added measure of peace and success.
Now I’m very careful to listen to the counsel given at general conference!

I Can Find Answers through General Conference
09689_000_005 President Uchtdorf teaches that if you think of some questions before general conference, the Lord can speak to you through His prophets and apostles during conference.
1. As a family or class, discuss what you need to learn, either individually or together. (For example: How do I strengthen my testimony? How should I deal with a problem at school?) On a piece of paper or in your journal, write down your questions.
2. In the weeks leading up to conference, you could think and pray about these questions.
3. Listen carefully during conference (it may help to take notes). Then write how the Lord—through Church leaders—answered your questions.
4. On another piece of paper, you could draw a picture of yourself doing what you learned.

Visiting Teaching Message: Strengthening Families by Increasing Spirituality
Close Audio
Study this material and, as appropriate, discuss it with the sisters you visit. Use the questions to help you strengthen your sisters and to make Relief Society an active part of your own life.
Strengthening Families by Increasing Spirituality
09689_000_006Julie B. Beck, Relief Society general president, said: “There has grown in me an overwhelming testimony of the value of daughters of God. … I have felt that there has never been a greater need for increased faith and personal righteousness. There has never been a greater need for strong families and homes.”
Sisters can help create strong homes and families as they act on personal revelation. “The ability to qualify for, receive, and act on personal revelation is the single most important skill that can be acquired in this life,” Sister Beck continued. “Qualifying for the Lord’s Spirit begins with a desire for that Spirit and implies a certain degree of worthiness. Keeping the commandments, repenting, and renewing covenants made at baptism lead to the blessing of always having the Lord’s Spirit with us. Making and keeping temple covenants also adds spiritual strength and power to a woman’s life. Many answers to difficult questions are found by reading the scriptures because the scriptures are an aid to revelation. … Daily prayer is essential to having the Lord’s Spirit with us.”1
We also strengthen our family members spiritually as we help them understand Heavenly Father’s eternal plan. “What can we do to better prepare our children spiritually for their eternal roles?” asked Elder M. Russell Ballard of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. “Perhaps the most inclusive answer is: Teach them how to live the principles of the gospel.” This teaching comes through daily prayer, scripture study, and family mealtimes as well as weekly family home evening and Church attendance. Elder Ballard explains: “We prepare each day, right now, for eternal life. If we are not preparing for eternal life, we are preparing for something less, perhaps something far less.”2
From the Scriptures
Proverbs 22:6; 1 John 3:22; Doctrine and Covenants 11:13–14; 19:38; 68:25
From Our History
The Prophet Joseph Smith taught the sisters in an April 1842 Relief Society meeting that they had a solemn obligation to seek their own salvation. He said, “After [my] instruction, you will be responsible for your own sins; it is a desirable honor that you should so walk before our heavenly Father as to save yourselves; we are all responsible to God for the manner we improve the light and wisdom given by our Lord to enable us to save ourselves.”3 He taught them to be righteous individuals, to become a holy people, and to prepare for temple ordinances and covenants.
What Can I Do?
1. How can I help my sisters increase in spiritual self-reliance?
2. How can I improve my own ability to recognize and respond to the Holy Spirit?

Chapter 29
The coming forth of the Book of Mormon is a sign that the Lord has commenced to gather Israel and fulfill his covenants—Those who reject his latter-day revelations and gifts will be cursed. About A.D. 34–35.
1 And now behold, I say unto you that when the Lord shall see fit, in his wisdom, that these sayings shall acome unto the Gentiles according to his word, then ye may know that the bcovenant which the Father hath made with the children of Israel, concerning their restoration to the clands of their inheritance, is already beginning to be fulfilled.
2 And ye may know that the words of the Lord, which have been spoken by the holy prophets, shall all be fulfilled; and ye need not say that the Lord adelays his coming unto the children of Israel.
3 And ye need not imagine in your hearts that the words which have been spoken are vain, for behold, the Lord will remember his covenant which he hath made unto his people of the house of Israel.
4 And when ye shall see these sayings coming forth among you, then ye need not any longer spurn at the doings of the Lord, for the asword of his bjustice is in his right hand; and behold, at that day, if ye shall spurn at his doings he will cause that it shall soon overtake you.
5 aWo unto him that bspurneth at the doings of the Lord; yea, wo unto him that shall cdeny the Christ and his works!
6 Yea, awo unto him that shall deny the revelations of the Lord, and that shall say the Lord no longer worketh by revelation, or by prophecy, or by bgifts, or by tongues, or by healings, or by the power of the Holy Ghost!
7 Yea, and wo unto him that shall say at that day, to get again, that there can be bno miracle wrought by Jesus Christ; for he that doeth this shall become clike unto the son of perdition, for whom there was no mercy, according to the word of Christ!
8 Yea, and ye need not any longer ahiss, nor bspurn, nor make game of the cJews, nor any of the remnant of the house of Israel; for behold, the Lord remembereth his covenant unto them, and he will do unto them according to that which he hath sworn.
9 Therefore ye need not suppose that ye can turn the right hand of the Lord unto the left, that he may not execute judgment unto the fulfilling of the covenant which he hath made unto the house of Israel.

“3 NE 27:4 And even unto the great and last day, when all people, and all kindreds, and all nations and tongues shall stand before God, to be judged of their works, whether they be good or whether they be evil—
5 If they be good, to the resurrection of everlasting life; and if they be evil, to the resurrection of damnation; being on a parallel, the one on the one hand and the other on the other hand, according to the mercy, and the justice, and the holiness which is in Christ, who was before the world began.”
“3 NE 28:25 For behold, out of the books which have been written, and which shall be written, shall this people be judged, for by them shall their works be known unto men.
33 And it came to pass that when Jesus had ended these sayings he said unto his disciples: Enter ye in at the strait gate; for strait is the gate, and narrow is the way that leads to life, and few there be that find it; but wide is the gate, and broad the way which leads to death, and many there be that travel therein, until the night cometh, wherein no man can work.”

We’ve a friends visiting South Africa currently – as per the norm much of what they see and hear is about the recent past (last 70 years) and not the last 400 years. Here’s what I responded with - c

Remember when South Africa was settled – there was no one living there. After the area was beginning to be settled – those who had no employment other where’s started to come into the land. It wasn’t perfect – but it was also very scary in parts of Africa – many who were sold into slavery were sold by the conquering tribes – and it was one step better than complete destruction. When the comments were being made in South Africa by Sen. Robert Kennedy – complete groups of white people were being liquidated in Rhodesia (North and South) – by those who’d moved to the area for work. Still today this liquidation is going on within Zimbabwe. Yes it was and is unfair – but one must remember events sometimes frame themselves to those in power. As Ben Franklyn observed, “Traitor is the term applied to those who lose a war – by those who win the war.” There’re many today in the areas you’re visiting feel it’s just a matter of time for similar liquidations to begin.

Of course we’ve nothing by love and understanding in our nation with Jesse Jackson and his powerful friends – who teach hatred instead of understanding. You and I and others will someday have to atone for the slavery which occurred here – relative to those enslaved (both white and black) who otherwise would’ve been annihilated prior to the slavery option. Civilization has little to do with rights and wrongs – but more with who’s in power. Many in the US would rather have a King than an elected government – some think we have one already – most don’t want freedom with responsibility and accountability – they want the fruits of another’s labor without doing anything themselves (a review of history has always shown this to be the case).

We must remember in the pre-existence there was only one Plan. However, there were two who offered to implement the Plan – the Savior – with the words, “Thy will be done – and the glory be thine.” And the other, “Let me go and I’ll have everyone return – the glory be mine.” Thus we’ve the introduction of both freedom and slavery from the very beginning. The first offering the right of choice (to choose to be obedient or not) and the other with no choice (but to be obedient without any thought of doing wrong).

Don’t misunderstand my thinking on slavery – however, let’s remember that sometimes it’s the only route to freedom of accountability and responsibility. Heavenly Father understood this – and therefore – we’ve the choice to obey or not. The sadness is when we choose not to obey we voluntarily relinquish our freedom of choices. Thus are we not in slavery to our Heavenly Father and the Savior? Do we not refer to them as Lord and Master? Do they not inflict harsh penalties upon those who’re disobedient? One must remember the stage in which mortality is played upon is very short in relationship to the eternities taught in the Scriptures. Yet how many by their choices infinitely define the limitations of what will happen after their mortal probation by having disobeyed even the simplest of Commandments?

Most feel the Old Testament is harsh and unforgiving – but it was the people and their continuous rebellion – wanting the easier life (at the expense of others) which caused their hardships. What was the penalty for disobedience to the Father and the Son? Death! What is our penalty to disobedience to the Father and the Son? A Spiritual Death and never being allowed to be with our loved ones in the Celestial Kingdom of which Paul and the Savior taught to all! “Many are called, but few are chosen – and why are they not chosen? Because their hearts are set so much upon the things of the world.” Should we then judge the history of a people from 20/20 hindsight? Rather should we not be obedient to the commands of the Father and the Son – doing what we’re to be doing today in our time and place? (See James 1:27)

Didn’t mean to go on like this but felt clarification was needful between friends. When a nation fosters hatred – they give life to it. Our nation is like this – it fosters division and hatred. Why? Because it is the easiest way for another to control and have power! Divide and conquer. The adversary loves it – and has been using it since the beginning of time and his rejection by the Father in favor of the 1st Born. Will there be a bloodbath in South Africa – I hope not – but if history is a measure of what will happen – someday at sometime things will go seriously wrong. England today is only the beginning (the riots there are planned – the same as those in our nation after every major sporting event). Sadly man/woman prefer war to peace – and hatred to love – and contention to happiness. Life is really quite simple and plain – yet we work overtime to complicate even the simplest tasks.

obedience is first
understanding all
clarity of simplicity
none dare judge
murmur or complain
terms agreed above
in place here below
mortality the field
to pass or fail!

“Respect”

Showing one’s respect
giving honor by actions
obeying instructions/laws
without murmuring calls
found within no fractions
doing all without neglect;

Lifting to a higher plane
sustaining in all ways
obedience freely given
righteously thus driven
in humility to praise
like Able and not Cain!

President Thomas S. Monson:
“When we have sampled much and have wandered far and have seen how fleeting and sometimes superficial a lot of the world is, our gratitude grows for the privilege of being part of something we can count on—home and family and the loyalty of loved ones. We come to know what it means to be bound together by duty, by respect, by belonging. We learn that nothing can fully take the place of the blessed relationship of family life.”1

“Tonight”

“Tonight”

Time to be given
mostly running out
so many minutes
even some for hours
yet where hard truths
most still sound asleep
thinking of tomorrow
and forgetting tonight!

“Thoughtfully”

Taking one’s time
attention to detail
carefully to unfold
word by word by word
line by line by line
page by page by page
each in its turn to be
thoughtfully it’s done
none can complain
none can contradict
yet so many contend
ignoring all and part
without thought done
excuses and abuses!

“Tis Here”

“Tis Here”

cji
8/7/11

The day awaited
a tomorrow wanted
one more chance
time to repent
seeking forgiveness
today the Lord’s day
tis here for all
yet few will enjoin
passing the invite
unwanting to change
the Commandments
just too difficult today
thus coming – gone
the Sabbath Day
unable to become
the tomorrow
of yesterday
so sought!

“Mix-Ups”

“Mix-Ups”

cji
8/6/11

Going in the wrong
direction or course
circular references
one used by another
till confusion found
littering the records
names to the right
names to the left
some not at all
others twice/thrice
dates mis-read too
then comes the fun
mix-ups in marriages
cousins intermarry
children named same
the game is family
Genealogy the goal
mix-ups aplenty!

“Irrefragable”

“Irrefragable”

The witch doctors gathered
illusions of priest crafts too
ranting and raving wildly
condemning and contenting
viciously denouncing all
yet irrefragable truth stands;

Meeting all critics demands
answering each marks call
despite many lies inventing
the devils minions snidely
denouncing all that’s true
amid four winds scattered!

None have ever proven false
revelations from heaven true
the Gospel restored fully today
despite the shrill screams
evil designs and dreams
all one needs to do is pray
the Scriptures all are true
none have ever proven false!

Home spun tales
weaving into history
taking turns in space
traveling quickly afar
winds pushing about
bends and twists
forgotten – remembered
differences ignored
rumors – hearsay
weaving into history
home spun tales!

Innocence unhidden
naive to the worldly
passing within/without
blending with His will
never ending insight
a candle in the night
the darkness to fill
not with any doubt
unseen to the worldly
translucent unhidden!
