“The Footman”

Holding the second rank
only the Butler was higher
in early colonial homes
a luxury for most families
thus only the wealthy
could afford such services
dressed in formal clothes
hired based on appearance
strength and youth needed
most unmarried to be so
for the Footman went afar
wherever the carriage goes
the Footman went as well
paid more than others
well-spoken when asked
understanding propriety
some to be elevated
to the Butler someday
who once they assisted
the second rank holding!
