"The Taylor's of Concord" (April 19, 1776)

“The Taylor’s of Concord”

7/4/14

The day was chill and long to be
yet stillness was in the morning
unless counting measured beats
where stood a small band to wait
soon hearing the marching pound
orders ringing in the stillness there
many of the beginning on this day
poorly armed men and lots of boys
facing the well trained British force
within their ranks a father and sons
a whole family less the womenfolk
six stalwart sons with their father
the Taylor’s of Concord stood one
5AM according to most it was
darkness still mostly all about
temperatures in the mid-forties
early dawn allowing all to see
then orders called to disband
confusion reared its ugliness
a shot fired starting the revolution
none claiming who fired the shot
but matters not in history today
all day long fighting continued
at the end of fighting complete
49 Americans dead 41 wounded
73 British dead 174 wounded
how often to think of this now
here the 4th of July us found
struggling to retain our freedom
again being threatened within
how many will stand as one
shoulder to shoulder to be
against a well trained force
calling themselves brown shirts
even worse homeland security
armed to the teeth for battle
against the honest citizens
enacting laws of wastefulness
lining their coffers with pelf
offering entitlements to aliens
always wondering am I today
how many Taylor’s of Concord
are there still among our own!
